“The best way to find yourself is to lose yourself in the service of others.”Mahatma Gandhi
It was an ordinary day since the Enhanced Community Quarantine had been implemented due to the Covid-19 Pandemic--- when these teachers from Chiang Kai Shek College IB Department launched their project called “Kariton ng Pag-asa”. It all started on Wednesday, April 22 when Mr. Ian Mark Arevalo- a teacher from IB Middle Years Program, Ms. Hannah- Mae De Jesus, and Ms. Genesis Abrigo- both teachers from IB Primary Years Program, with help from various sponsors, distributed packed lunch, medicine, face masks, and face shields to the street dwellers around Espiritu Santo Parochial School in Tayuman. It was a fulfilling day and the team decided to do more.
Social media has been an excellent avenue for the team to spread their advocacy of helping more people outside the streets. Overwhelmed with the number of sponsors reaching out--- the team was able to extend additional nourishment, including packed rice and vitamins. So far, part of the team’s mission is to seek help for numerous stranded construction workers near their area.
The team is on their 3rd day of service using the kariton. Their recent trip last May 1 is dedicated to hard-working front-liners and laborers. As a way of giving back--- packed lunches were given to them. The team will still be carrying their advocacy forward regardless of how heavy the kariton would get in the scorching summer heat. What keeps them going? The heart-melting appreciation and gratitude of those people they were able to help. As the saying goes, “We will heal and can get through this as one!”
