Scouts Reach Out to Typhoon Maring Victims

True to their motto of "Be Prepared", boy and girl scouts of Chiang Kai Shek College showed their readiness to help when they extended service on at least four separate occasions, done immediately after successive days of heavy monsoon rains brought by typhoon "Maring" battered the Philippines.

Thirty-three scouts joined thousands of other volunteers last August 21 (Wednesday) in repacking relief goods for typhoon victims at the Department of Social Welfare and Development - National Resources Operations Center (DSWD-NROC) in Pasay City. Accompanying them was Jelvin Ralph Sy, head of the grade school discipline office, along with other volunteer leaders of the CKSC Scout Center.

The next day, another group of forty-one scouts packed more relief goods, this time at Caritas Manila in Pandacan. And with classes still suspended in Manila, a group of forty-seven scouts, led by grade school discipline office's assistant head Naty Sia, again made good use of their idle time by volunteering and doing the same task at the United Evangelical Church of the Philippines in Benavides Street. Another set of forty-three scouts heeded the call to help other people with another relief goods packing operation at Operation Blessing Foundation in Pasig City last August 24, Saturday.

Last July, CKSC boy scouts also joined in commemorating Scout Memorial Day to remember the twenty boy scouts and four scoutmasters who died in a plane crash at the Bay of Bombay near Mumbai, India in 1963.  They were the country's delegates to the 11th World Jamboree in Marathon, Greece. The  ill-fated scouts and their leaders are now immortalized with streets named after them in Quezon City.

In 2013, the nation commemorated the 50th anniversary of this tragic accident. A ceremony was held last July 28 at the Ala-Ala Memorial and Mausoleum at the North Cemetery.  A planned Scouts Memorial Hall and Wall of Remembrance was also unveiled during the program. A similar program was also held last July 24 at Sta. Rita College in Gagalangin, Tondo to honor Scout Ramon Albano. On both occasions, CKSC boy scouts were there.
