CKSC Volunteers for Good Cause

Chiang Kai Shek College is an institution of academic excellence. It believes in instilling values that are essential not only for academic and professional excellence, but also in molding its students to become good citizens of the country. As such, the school exposes it students to various community involvement and outreach projects within or outside the school premises.

One such event was the tree planting activity organized by the Metro Manila Development Authority last September 15 at the former San Mateo Landfill in Barangay Pintong Bukawe, San Mateo, Rizal. The said activity was led by its implementing arm, the Metropolitan Manila Emergency Volunteer Corps, with the goal of planting 100,000 trees by year-end. It also aimed at promoting social relevance and environmental awareness and fostering cooperative spirit and camaraderie among government personnel, volunteers, and other stakeholders. More than 1,000 MMDA personnel and members of volunteer-partner organizations joined the worthwhile event, including 10 high school scouts from Chiang Kai Shek College.

That same day, a medical and dental mission was organized by the Manila Divisoria Lions Club at the basement of CKSC's Padre Algue Campus. The Lions were ably assisted by volunteer doctors, dentists, and nurses as well as Araling Panlipunan (A.P.) teachers, members of the school's A.P. Club, and boy and girl scouts. More than 100 families from nearby communities benefited from this project.

True to their sworn duty to the country and other people, CKSC scouts joined two more community service projects.

A group of twenty-five boy scouts, mostly from the grade school department, joined the Luzon-wide tree planting activity last September 21 at the Sacred Heart Novitate Compound in Novaliches, Quezon City. The project was initiated by the Knights of Columbus, Luzon Jurisdiction.

A big delegation of more than one hundred boy and girl scouts trooped to Manila Bay along Roxas Boulevard and joined the 28th International Coastal Cleanup, also held on September 21, 2013. The International Coastal Cleanup (ICC) is held annually every third Saturday of September. On this day, people gather on beaches, coasts, rivers, waterways and underwater dive sites all over the world to remove trash and debris and identify their sources. The data is used to raise awareness, inspire recycling efforts, and shape policy decisions.

During the 2013 ICC,  scouts and other cleanup volunteers saw all kinds of trash washed out to shores, from unique items like toothbrushes, slippers, umbrellas and handbags to the ubiquitous food wrappers and plastic bags. They recorded every item listed in a data card to help build comprehensive solutions for trash free seas. Although ICC is just a one day event, CKSC scouts who volunteered to help in this worthwhile endeavor have made a meaningful difference in the health and vitality of our seas, rivers and lakes.
